【Hitachi】 OS-V for the V-7000 Series

OS-V was the operating system for the V-7000 series of 32-bit-architecture multipurpose computers. The operating system supported VNET — a horizontal/vertical distributed processing function, RDB/V — a relational database, and Open Systems Interconnection (OSI), among other functions.

OS-V’s main features were as follows.

  • Horizontal/vertical distributed processing function — OS-V implemented network functions (VNET), such as remote terminals between V-7000 machines, network file access, and file transfers, and a micro-mainframe link function with multiple protocols for connections with host computers.
  • Disk redundancy and security functions — OS-V provided auto-operation and remote-maintenance functions and utility functions, such as collection and output of system logs and account data, performance benchmarking tools, database recovery utilities, etc. Confidentiality was protected through combinations of access levels, passwords, and user-specific IDs.
  • Relational database function — OS-V implemented a true relational database that was compliant with the SQL standard. It also provided the VCAST integrated tabulation and calculation sub-system that enabled the application of relational databases.
  • Connections to other computer models via OSI — OS-V supported OSI access subroutines, such as FTAM (file transfer) and MHS (email), that could be used from applications.
  • Software development system — OS-V implemented functions that measured inspection coverage and that were linked to the software development environment.
