This was an 8-bit AV (Audio Visual) personal computer from Fujitsu. Graphics for simultaneous display of 4,096 colors and an FM(Frequency Modulation) sound source were standard equipment. The first model, the FM77AV, was announced in October of 1985. It had the following features:
- Compatibility with the FM-8, FM-7 and FM-NEW7
- It broke the 8 color barrier, achieving simultaneous display of 4,096 colors for the first time
It employed a MMR (Memory Mapping Register) feature to enhance graphics based on the FM-77. The operating speed of this MMR became a bottleneck, and it would not operate with a CPU frequency of 2MHz. Therefore speed had to be reduced to 1.6MHz, but this was improved in the FM77AV40EX/AV20EX. - An FM sound source was standard, in addition to the previous PSG sound source
- Built-in 3.5-inch floppy disk (320 kilobytes/drive) (1 or 2 drives)
- Superimposition (combining a personal computer screen with a TV screen) and video digitize (import of video images) were possible as options
Enhancing the AV features and Japanese language capabilities of the FM77AV, and Fujitsu announced the FM77AV40EX/20EX in November 1987, and the FM77AV40SX in November 1988. The FM7740SX became Fujitsu's last 8-bit personal computer model, but the AV capabilities of the FM77AV Series were inherited by the FM TOWNS.
