【NEC】 NEC System 3100A Series

In October 1988, NEC announced the NEC System 3100A Series with enhanced network functionality.

As the successor series of the NEC System 3100 Series, the NEC System 3100A Series was offered as a product line suitable for building large-scale core business processing systems and distributed processing systems.

In the Model 60A and higher, the clock frequency of the IDP-2 32-bit processor was improved from 20megahertz to 25megahertz. The Model 30A and higher were shipped with high-speed cache memory as standard equipment, and the Model 40A,50A and 60A could connect additional high-speed magnetic disk (memory capacity: 290megabytes) with an access time of 18miliseconds. These improved processing performance of the Model 30A and higher by about 30percent over the 3100 Series. The Model 90A, which was added as the top-end machine, was the largest office computer (An office computer is a small business computer specialized in office operation) in Japan. It enabled connection of up to a maximum of 240 workstations, and had a maximum main memory capacity of 72megabytes and a maximum external memory capacity of 9.6gigabytes. The Model 90A enlarged the performance range of the series (from the top-end machine to the low-end machine) by 20 times.
