In May 1987, NEC announced the NEC System 3100, employing multiple processors.
As the successor of the VS Series, this product was designed to meet the need for faster and larger office computers(*). Newly developed technologies improved processing capacity by up to 2.4 times, communications capacity by 10 times, and LAN speed by 4 times compared to the VS Series.
- *: Office computers are small business computers specialized in office operation.
In terms of multimedia processing capabilities, these machines allowed connection of up to a maximum of 4 optical disks with a memory capacity of 3.6GB (enabling storage of approx. 80,000 A4 size documents), and this made it possible to process large volumes of multi-media documents.
