In May 1989, NEC announced the Bungou mini 7HR -- the first personal word processor equipped with a 12-inch vertical display capable of displaying a full A4 page on the screen -- and the Bungou mini5HD, a laptop equipped with a large 40 character x 22 line large liquid crystal display.
The Bungou mini7HR was distinguished by the fact that it was the first personal word processor in the industry to be equipped with a 12-inch vertical CRT capable of displaying a full A4 page (40 character x 41 lines), and thus documents could be created without scrolling the screen. It was also the industry's first personal word processor equipped (standard) with layout software and a personal DTP system for desktop publishing. Other standard features were: outline fonts, and a 48-dot printer capable of printing enlarge characters with high quality. This suite of features allowed the creation of a wide variety of high-quality documents.
Although it was a laptop, the Bungou mini5HD was equipped with a high-contrast liquid crystal screen with a 40 char. x 22 line display (the largest among liquid crystal type personal word processors) and a 48-dot high-density printer.
