The HITAC L-30, 50, 70/8ES Series was a line of new models announced and first shipped in 1988 as higher-end successors to the HITAC L-30, 50, 70/8 Series of office processors. The Series was designed for broader applicability to different fields and diverse user needs -- from the core business applications of mid-size companies, to applications in the departments of large corporations.
The top-end machines (HITAC l-70/58ES and higher) employed technology like 32-bit 60,000 gate CMOS VLSI, and the HITAC L-70/8ES Series as a whole had enhanced features like larger memory and disk capacity.
MI0S7/ES was used as the OS. Horizontal distributed functionality of the HITAC L-70/8ES Series conformed to OSI, so systems ranging from LANs to wide-area networks could be built using the same concepts. The series also supported ISDN and 10megabit/second LANs.
The lower-end HITAC L-30 and 50/8ES used the 80286 as their standard CPU, and the new MIOS3/ES2 as their operating system -- for better compatibility with MIOS3/ES for fixed-form business processing, and MIOS/PC for OA tasks.
