In May 1994 Fujitsu rolled out the OASYS 30-AP101, the first personal word processor with a built-in hard drive. Because of its 120 MB hard drive, the 30-AP101 featured better performance and better convenience than past models in the following areas.
- Storage: The 30-AP101’s hard drive could store the equivalent of 20 2HD floppy disks (about 6,000 A4 pages). It could also store single documents as long as 50 A4 pages.
- Typefaces: The hard drive stored five Japanese outline fonts and 21 Western fonts. Previously, printing required the user to swap floppy disks.
- Sample sentences: The hard drive housed fifty sample sentences
- Convenience: All programs were stored on the hard drive. Previously, the user had to swap floppy disks to run certain programs.
Because it was positioned as Fujitsu’s highest performance personal word processor, the OASYS 30-AP101 came loaded with features for business applications, such as a multi-line printer with 400 dpi resolution and print speeds as fast as 190 characters per second, a graphing function with 13 formats and 163 patterns, and the ability to send and receive faxes and communicate with computers when used with the optional modem.
