Toshiba launched the TOSWORD JW-3550, JW-3570, and JW-3580 business word processors in 1996. The word processors included a high-speed CPU for faster processing and came preinstalled with Gakken’s Gendai Shin Kokugo Jiten Japanese dictionary with about 65,000 headwords. Other features included Lotus 1-2-3 R2.5J and enhanced print functions.
The inclusion of a Japanese dictionary simplified the checking of homonyms while creating and editing documents, which allowed for more accurate documents.
The word processors used a high-speed CPU equivalent to a 75 MHz Pentium processor that increased processing speeds between two and five times that of previous models. The speed boost was particularly noticeable with screen scrolling (five times faster) and graph and print preview displays (four times faster). This made creating and editing landscape-oriented forms, A3 documents, and statistical materials much faster.
Lotus 1-2-3 R2.5J could be launched just by pressing a function key. The preinstalled version of Lotus 1-2-3 added several functions to the standard Lotus 1-2-3 program, including the Easy Form function for creating spreadsheet formats interactively and the Data Conversion function for converting between the spreadsheet screen and the TOSWORD document screen.
The enhanced print functions included more fonts (14 Japanese typefaces and 12 Western typefaces), support for high-resolution 600 dpi page printers, and the ability to print and work on documents at the same time.
