NEC announced its JX5 series of word processors in October 1995. Thanks to a VGA-compatible LCD screen and a dedicated controller, the color models could display up to 256 colors and the monochrome models could display up to 16 shades of gray. Displays were made easier to read as well. The word processors also packed in the V810 32-bit RISC-based microprocessor for faster editing and printing and improved overall operability.
The JX5 series consisted of the JX5300AC, 5500AC, 5700AC, 5500AS, and 5300AS models.
- The JX5 series had the following features.
- （1）The VGA-compatible, 640 x 480 pixel DSTN color LCD screen on the 5500AC and 5700AC permitted up to 256 colors to be displayed simultaneously. This greatly improved the legibility of documents with colored text.
- （2）The JX5500AC and 5700AC featured a single “magical” barcode reader that functioned both as a barcode reader and as a stylus pen. Format settings and color selections could be made just by scanning a barcode. When functioning as a pen, the reader could be used to input handwritten pictures and characters on the screen. It could also simplify editing functions, such as drawing lines, specifying boundaries, dragging objects, and expanding or reducing sizes.
- （3）The JX5700AC came with a CRT output connector. By connecting the word processor to the optional screen output unit, users could show the processor’s screen on a television or projector.
- （4）All models except the JX5300AS could import video data from a connected video camera or video deck. Cutting and splicing video data could be done quite easily.
- （5）All models included a PCMCIA card slot to improve their expandability. Plugging in a modem card could enable communications as fast as 14,400 bps.
- （6）The paper cassette on the JX5500AC, 5700AC, and 5500AS accepted special word processor transparent films for overhead projectors as well as A4 and B5 sheets, special A4 and B5 thermal paper, prepaid postcards, and reply postcards. The word processors would auto feed and print once paper was loaded in the cassette.
- （7）The word processors included exercises for the national word processing trade skills tests administered by the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Keytouch 2000 Test, which had just started in 1994.
