NEC released three personal word processors — the mini 5SX, the mini 7SX, and the mini 7SD — in October 1991. The three models offered faster printing speeds and higher quality typography using 3D Bezier curves for smoother character outlines. They were also the first word processors in the industry to feature Heisei typefaces, which were specially designed for word processing devices and gave superior character balance.
- The features of the three models are as follows:
- (1)The word processors featured the Heisei (Mincho and Gothic) typeface. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s Agency of Industrial Science and Technology requested the Japan Standards Association’s Font Development and Promotion Center to develop the Heisei typeface specifically for word processing devices. The typeface was well balanced and easy to read in both vertical and horizontal orientations and when either expanded or condensed.
- (2)The word processors used 3D Bezier curves for smoother looking outline fonts and a new multi-line printer with a print density of 400 dots/inch. As a result, the word processors could print beautiful text at both regular sizes and expanded sizes.
- (3)The word processors offered faster and higher quality printing with the inclusion of a dedicated V60 processor for high-speed processing of outline fonts, a 16 MHz V33 microprocessor as the CPU, and a 160-dot multi-line printer that could print up to 2.6 lines simultaneously.
