In April 1976, NEC announced the NEAC System 100E and 100F office computers (small business computers specialized in office operation) which used LSI throughout. They featured the first Japanese produced 16-bit LSI processor and 4 kbit LSI memory, and complete conversion to LSI was achieved by using LSI peripheral control circuits for the floppy disk drive, printer and CRT display. The switch to LSI eliminated the need for an independent cabinet for the central processing unit, and the CPU was incorporated into the operation console. This was also the first desktop office computer in Japan equipped (standard) with a CRT display instead of the conventional printer. As a result, this desktop office computer became lighter and more compact, with a weight 1/2.5th that of conventional models, and half the previous power consumption.
The NEAC System 100J had performance and capabilities rivaling a general-purpose small computer, and was announced as a higher-end model in August of the same year.
