The HITAC L-30, 50, 70/8 Series product line appeared in 1986, as the successor series of the L-30, 50, 70/5 Series. The Series had greatly enhanced functions, including a relational database, horizontal distributed capability enabling network connection of L-70 systems, and data exchange capabilities between PC software and business processing. Starting with this Series, these systems began to be called "office processors". The floppy disks used as the data exchange medium were changed from the previous 8-inch to the 3.5-inch type.
The L-70 system was expanded to 6 models -- L-70/08, 18, 28, 48, 58 and 68 -- to enable it to handle a wider range of needs. Compared with the L-70/55, the top of the line L-70/68 had a maximum memory capacity expanded from 16Mbyte to 31Mbyte, a maximum file capacity expanded from 2Gbyte to 4Gbyte, and a maximum number of work stations expanded from 30 to 60.
The L-30 and L-50 were provided with improved cost performance, and changed to the lineup L-30/08, 18 and L-50/18.
