As one part of the DIPS-11/5EX Series, whose development began in 1988, the CCPU-IEX and CCP-IIEX communication control processors were developed by the NTT Research Laboratory as successors for the CCP-IE and CCP-IIE communication control processors for the DIPS-11/5E Series.
The main features of these processors were as follows. (1) They enabled diversion of the huge program assets running on the existing CCP-IE/IIE and achieved live-line connection/disconnection of line adapters, thereby enabling expansion/changes in lines currently in online operation. (2) As a new high-speed digital-line service for expanding the application domain, they achieved mixed handling of heterogeneous lines such as INS Net, in addition to high super-digital dedicated line services and Ethernet-LAN (10 Mbit/second). (3) High-speed optical serial transfer was used to connect communication control unit (CCU) consoles that performed protocol processing and link unit (LUT) consoles equipped with LA, thereby enabling separation of the CCU and LUT by about 2 km. By this, the LUT could be installed in the exchange room and line cable wiring costs could be reduced. They also increased the degree of freedom in the CCP layout, eliminating the need to install the CCP subsystem, comprised of a unit currently in use and a spare unit, on the same floor (DIPS Communication Control Processor Main Specifications)
