In May 1974, NEC announced the N7620 Series of magnetic tape units which achieved 1600RPI using the PE (Phase Encoding) system. The Series was announced together with NEC's new mainframe, the ACOS Series 77.
These units employed the vacuum-combined single capstan drive system. They were equipped with automatic reel lock, an automatic tape mounting mechanism, and a mounting mechanism employing cartridges for laborsaving operation.
The Series was compatible with JIS/ISO standard open reel tape (1/2 inch wide, 2400 feet long), and multiple models were available with different tape running and data transfer speeds.
