The MK2728FB and MK2728FC were the first 2.5-inch magnetic disk units to feature more than 1 GB of storage. Their 1.08 GB of storage was the largest for a 2.5-inch-disk unit in the world at the time. Toshiba began shipping samples of the units in 1995.
Around this time the amounts of data computers were processing were skyrocketing because of the development of smaller, more powerful computers and because of the popularity of Microsoft Windows. This put more pressure than ever before on compact storage devices to deliver even greater storage capacities. Through technologies that raised recording densities, partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) signal processing, and improved formatting efficiencies, the MK2728FB and MK2728FC were able to cross the 1 GB capacity threshold.
The only difference between the two models was the interface: the MK2728FB had a SCSI-2 interface, and the MK2728FC had a Fast ATA interface.
